Domestic Glories exhibition @ The Bay House, Westport
1 February - 21 February 2011
The Domestic Glories series is an exploration of female identity inspired by traditional domestic textiles.
The concepts and the visual aesthetic are from the 50s onwards, no doubt because this is my own lifetime. There are recurring themes: secrecy, romanticism, hypocrisy, motherhood, wifehood, `femininity’ and denial. Aprons have a particular interest for me because, as well as their practical function, they serve as a mask for the body.
I also wish to honour women’s skill, and their determination to make something useful and beautiful out of very little.
